Over 100 years after they had been killed on the Somme, on Wednesday 19th October two young men of the 10th Battalion Essex Regiment were finally laid to rest.
In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Gueudecourt (12th October 1916), a ceremony was held at the Newfoundland Gueudecourt Memorial.
The Battle of Flers-Courcelette was launched on 15th September 1916. This battle was the first major engagement of the New Zealand Division on the Western Front, where they lost 7,500 men in just three weeks of fighting. To mark the 100th anniversary of the battle, commemorations were held from dawn until dusk at the New Zealand memorials in Longueval.
A commemorative bench was unveiled on 19th September 2016 at Thiepval. A gift from County Durham and the local British press, this seat pays homage to the men of the 18th Battalion Durham Light Infantry, many of whom fell during the 1916 Battle of the Somme.
On Sunday 11 September 2016, a ceremony was held at the Chapel of Remembrance and Cemetery of Rancourt – Bouchavesnes-Bergen in remembrance of the Frenchmen who fought and died in the Battle of the Somme
