Theatre event of the Centenary: soldier-playwright R C Sherriff's heart-breaking story of ten men in a dugout just before an attack is the only WW1 drama written by someone who fought on the Western Front. First produced in 1928 - for one night only with Laurence Olivier in the lead - it quickly became a global phenomenon with 30 productions in 18 different languages worldwide. Sherriff's lived experience is unmistakable in its authenticity. He said, "I didn't need to create these characters, they walked out fully-formed on to the page." Not-to-be-missed.
