On 4th July 2016, the Santerre 2014-2018 association and the Haut Picardy District Council are organising a ceremony in remembrance of the French Foreign Legion which liberated Belloy-en-Santerre on 4th July 1916. In just a few minutes, hundreds of soldiers had been killed by German machine guns, including two poets: American Alan Seeger and Spaniard Camil Campanya.
The ceremony will begin at 8am at the village war memorial of Belloy-en-Santerre, with music from 70 muscians of the French Foreign Legion and almost 300 reprensentatives from countries including USA, Spain and German.
A mass will be held at 11am, and a delegation will head to Lihons in order to lay a wreath in remmebrance of Alan Seeger and his comrades.
Music by the French Foreign Legion will then resume at Faÿ at 3pm.
