The British composer George Butterworth was born on 12 July 1885 and died in the line of duty as a lieutenant in the 13th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. He was killed by a sniper at Pozières in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme but his body never found. The trench he had dug was named Butterworth Trench in his memory. Lieutenant G. Butterworth MC is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, pier and face 14 A and15 C.
A ceremony will be held in remembrance of George Butterworth at 10.30am on Sunday 7 August at the Butterworth Memorial (route de Bazentin at Pozières).
Participants are invited to joint the toast to friendship that will be held after the ceremony.
