The Centenary Sound and Light Show

The Centenary Sound and Light Show

Friday 27 July 2018 - 00:00 to Sunday 29 July 2018 - 00:00

At nightfall, in the warm July atmosphere, around the fields of Pozières, the Battle of the Somme is echoing in the distance.

Australians, British, Canadians, French and Germans are fighting against one another during blood-shedding battles. Pozières was one of the theatres of these relentless combats. This village highlights the very soul of this war. Here, behind the History with a capital ‘H’, there was daily life, the stories of these men who shared joys and pains in these troubled times. For example, we recall Captain Percy Cherry’s story. This young officer received a bundle of letters, which were handed over by a fatally wounded German soldier. These letters were to be sent to the German’s family. We retell the tragic disappearance of the British composer, George Butterworth. You will also relive the heroic episode of the blockhaus Gibraltar, the attack of the first tanks, and the history of Von Richthofen, The Red Baron, the ace of German airplanes shot down over Vaux-sur-Somme April 21,1918.

special tribute will also be paid to the animals that accompanied the soldiers and died on the battlefield.
This sound and light show, enchanting as well as deeply affecting, ends on a message filled with reconciliation and peace. This symbolical message is delivered by children and destined for future generations.
