Centenary of the First World War Armistice - Villers-Bretonneux

On the 11th November 1918 the Armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany, bringing an end to four long years of war.

On the one hundredth anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, the Australian Government is holding a ceremony at the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux at 10.30 am.

8.00 am : site opens
8.30 am : pre-service starts
10.00 am : everyone to be seated
10.30 am : official service starts
11.30 am : end of the official service
12.30 pm : ceremony in the centre of Villers-Bretonneux

All visitors and tour operators to the commemorative service will require an attendance pass to gain entry to the Australian National Memorial and are required to carry identification with them.

Visit the Sir John Monash Centre
The Sir John Monash Centre will be open from midday on 11 November. In order to visit the centre on this day, people will need to make a booking. Bookings will also need to be made in the days leading up to 11 November and for 12 and 13 November due to the expected high numbers. To make a booking, click here.

How to access the ceremony

Visitors approaching the Australian National Memorial site from Fouilloy on foot will be directed to the pedestrian/bike path which runs parallel to the road. Those approaching from Villers-Bretonneux will walk along the designated pedestrian/bike path to the Memorial site. At the end of the pathways you will enter the Memorial and move through airport-style security screening onto the promenade area. From here you will walk approximately 300 metres on grass, slightly uphill through the centre of the cemetery to the seating area. The surface is grass and may be slippery if damp.

Shuttle service

A shuttle system set up by Somme Tourisme is available to anyone wishing to reach the ceremony from Amiens.

8.15 am : Departure from Amiens train station - Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux - 12.30 pm way back to Amiens

  

 

 

8.15 am : Departure from Amiens train station - Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux - Ceremony in the town centre of Villers-Bretonneux - 2.30 pm way back to Amiens
