Centenary of the First World War Armistice - Somme

On 11th November 1918, four long years of war were brought to an end when the Armistice was signed in a railway carriage at Rethondes near Compiègne. This historic date was made a public holiday in France and today marks an important occasion for local inhabitants to gather at their war memorials and cemeteries in remembrance of the fallen.

Small ceremonies and remembrance parades are also held in each town and village of the Somme on the 11th November. Visitors will be made most welcome if they wish to attend these commemorative events. Here's a selection:



- A concert will take place on Saturday 10th November 2018 at 8.30pm in the cathedral of Amiens. Find all the information about the An Zukunft (Aux lendemains) concert here.

- At the end of this exceptional concert in the Cathedral, at 10pm, a distribution of lanterns will take place on the square of the Cathedral for a guided tour in the city centre of Amiens.
Way back at the Cathedral square at 11.50pm.

On the one hundredth anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, the Australian Government is holding a ceremony at the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux at 10.30 am. If you want to take part in this ceremony, check out this article dedicated to the ceremony and the shuttle service set up for those who want to reach the ceremony from Amiens.

Please note that the Sir John Monash Centre will be open from midday on 11 November. In order to visit the centre on this day or during the entire week, people will need to make a booking.

- Commemoration at Le Hamel. 11th November 2018.
11:30 am : Rendez-vous at the Australian Memorial - Wreath laying.
12:00 pm : Wreath laying at the French Monument aux Morts.

- Armistice Centenary concert from Australia : The Silent Anzac. Thursday 8th November 2018 at 7.00pm. The Footscray-Yarraville City Band presents a specially commissioned major work recounting the exploits of the Australian submarine HMAS AE2. Church at Le Hamel. Free concert.

- Discover unseen footage of the war that will help you understand the daily life of men and women during the First World War.
5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 November 2018 from 7.30 to 9.30pm. Salle des fêtes of Le Hamel.
- From 7.30 to 9.30pm : Exhibition « Festival of War Images : 14-18 in Val de Somme » : exhibition of photos taken on the battlefields of the Val de Somme by the French army during the First World War.
- 'Ciné-concert' at 8.30pm : Archive footage showing the Somme Battlefields by French soldiers between 1914 and 1918.

- Remembrance show 'Mots Tranchées', Saturday 10th November 2018 at 9pm.
By the Bidon group. A striking musical creation where the group integrates recited music and texts in French and translated into English and German (video screening).

- Exhibition 'The soldiers of Hautefeuille of the First World War', Saturday 10th November 2018 from 2.30pm to 5pm and Sunday 11th November 2018 from 10am to 5pm.
In a chapel of the church open to the choir and dedicated to Remembrance, an exhibition of photos, old documents and anecdotes about the victims of the First World War and those who returned.
Free admission. Saint-Pierre d'Heilly Church.

- Remembrance Walk from Albert to Ypres (Belgium). From 7th to 10th November.
Each day, a walk of 25km on a remembrance trail.

 - Ceremonies at the War memorials. All villages of the Poppy Country. 11th November 2018 at 11am.

- Commemorative Walk for Peace on the circuit of Remembrance and events for peace. 11th November 2018.
2.00 pm : Circuit of Remembrance : Albert - Aveluy - Authuille -Thiepval. Departure at the Stade Vélodrome.
7.00 pm : Fireworks on the square Emile Leturcq.

- Conferences and debates by local historians 'Technological developments'. 6th session : « il y a 100 ans » (100 years ago). 25th November 2018, from 3.00pm.
Theatre du Jeu de Paume. Free entrance.



- Ceremony at the Thiepval Memorial organized by the CWGC and RBL. 11th November 2018, at 11am.
Followed by the municipal commemoration at the war memorial.
Please arrive before 10:30am.

- Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Newfoundland Memorial in Beaumont-Hamel. 11th November 2018, at 11 am.
For the Remembrance day, visitors are invited to pay tribute to those who served in times of war, conflict or peace. Participants should arrive at the memorial site before 10:30 am to attend the ceremony.


- Commemorative service at the Mametz Memorial on November 11th at 3.00pm.
It will be a Rugby Armistice Tribute led by John Dennison. The service will last around 45 minutes.


- Ceremony of the centenary of the Armistice starting at 4 pm, 10th November 2018.
