102nd Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme - Commemorations

Sunday 1 July 2018 - From 07h30 to 18h00

The 1st July marks the beginning of the Battle of the Somme, one of the most deadly battles of the First World War. On this first day alone, the British Army suffered 60,000 casualties, including nearly 20,000 killed. This was the worst day in British military history. Each year, in remembrance of the men who fought and died during this battle, moving commemorations are held at various sites of remembrance in the Somme.

Programme of commemorations - 1st July 2018

All are welcome to attend the ceremonies of the 1st July 2018. No invitation or prior registration is required.

7.28am: Lochnagar Crater in La Boisselle (guests must arrive for 7.10am at the very latest)

9.15am: McCrae's Battalion Memorial in front of the church of Contalmaison

11am: Thiepval Memorial to the Missing (please note that for security reasons, guests must arrive between 8.30am and 9.30am. Parking located along the D151 (see below). Shuttles will bring the visitors to the commemorative site).

2.30pm: Ulster Tower in Thiepval

4pm: Newfoundland Memorial Park in Beaumont- Hamel (guests are requested to arrive before 3.30pm)

5.30pm: German Cemetery and village war memorial of Fricourt

6.45pm: beginning at the Town Hall of Albert, followed by services at the cemetery to the soldiers of Britanny, the British cemetery, and the town's war memorial

7.30pm: The Leaning Virgin’s Pipers in front of Notre Dame de Brebières Basilica in Albert
