Photos of the most memorable moments of the Centenary of the Battle of the Somme

From 1st July to 18 November 2016, numerous events and ceremonies were held in commemoration of the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. This deadly battle inflicted well over a million casualties, all sides included, and caused the complete devastation of hundreds of villages to the east of the Somme.

Over the last four and a half months, municipalities, associations, local residents and national and international organisations have come together to honour the servicemen who fought and died during this bloody battle. The commemorations were attended by thousands of visitors including state representatives of the highest order.

The Somme Departmental Council was naturally fully involved in these important events and its varied and heartfelt commemorative actions include the creation of a new museum at the Thiepval Visitor Centre, the release of a special magazine about the history of the Somme, an educational booklet especially designed for local school children, the launch of the Poems for Peace operation, the creation of the Rose Somme 2016, and, to close the centenary period, a concert entitled Spectacle for Peace.

Almost 250,000 visitors visited the sites of remembrance of the Somme during this exceptional year of commemoration (35% more than previous years). We would like to thank you all - visitors and inhabitants of the Somme - for helping to keep the memory alive.

Lest we forget.
