The 1st July 2016 Commemorations in Photos

Friday, 1st July 2016, marks the centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Major ceremonies were held at six sites of remembrance of the Somme in commemoration of one of the worst battles in History.

At the Lochnagar Crater in La Boisselle, the McCrae's Battalion Memorial in Contalmaison, the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, the Ulster Tower, the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Park and at the German Cemetery of Fricourt, tens of thousands of visitors joined together in remembrance of the men who fought and died in the Somme one hundred years ago.

Inspired by the national flowers of remembrance - the poppy for the British and Commonwealth countries, the cornflower for the French and the forget-me-not for the Germans - the 'Association Picarde des Parcs et Jardins' created the "Rose Somme 2016" for the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. In celebration of its first anniversary, the Rose Somme 2016 is now in full bloom at the Elysée Palace.
