American monuments in Cantigny

The Battle of Cantigny which takes place from May 28 to 31, 1918 is still extremely important in the United States history because it is the first major American battle of the Great War.

The Battle of Cantigny helped stem the German spring offensives of 1918, bolstered the Allies’ morale and demonstrated American fighting skill.More than 1,000 Americans became casualties during this battle including 199 are killed. These soldiers are now buried in the Somme American Cemetery at Bony, Aisne.

At Cantigny, the US 1st Division began a record of American success. With nearly a million of Americans now in France, the Allies’ attention could turn from stemming defeat to winning the war.

Today, several monuments in Cantigny have been built to remember these feats of arms.
