The new gallery of the 1916 Museum

The newly extended Somme 1916 Museum reopened on 1st July, with its gallery devoted to nine heroes of the Great War connected to the history of the Somme...

In addition to its recent complete makeover, carried out at the beginning of the year, the Somme 1916 Museum now offers a brand-new gallery devoted to nine heroes of the Great War, which was opened on 1st July. These nine people are symbols of the universal nature of the fighting, up at the front and behind the lines, men and women alike. In one way or another, all nine of these heroes showed their heroism in the fight for life and in the fight to resist the horrors of war. Let’s take a closer look at some of them:

George Butterworth, an English composer with a promising career ahead of him, had just turned 31 when he died on 5th August 1916.

John McCrae, the Canadian doctor, soldier and poet who at Ypres wrote "In Flanders Fields", the poem which gave rise to the poppy symbol.

Berthe Mouchette, a French painter and art teacher, who helped with the work of rebuilding the village of Dernancourt.

Percy Herbert Cherry, an Australian soldier who fought at Pozières. He was awarded a Victoria Cross (the highest British military honour), and was killed on 27th March 1917.
